Duo nabbed for warrants and fines totalling nearly R400 000

During the past week, traffic officers executed 1822 warrants of arrest, including two motorists with 154 outstanding warrants and fines totalling R390 910.
Just after 06:00 on Friday, 31 January 2025 traffic officers were conducting a vehicle stop and search on Highlands Drive, Mitchells Plain when they noticed the driver of a white minibus making a U-turn.
Officers swiftly responded and pursued the minibus. The driver stopped the vehicle in Colorado and tried to run into a house, but he was apprehended.
When officers checked his details, they found he has 69 outstanding warrants and fines to the value of R105 310.
Less than two hours later, officers were conducting a vehicle stop and search on Jakes Gerwel Drive in Mitchells Plain. They pulled over a minibus taxi and found the driver was operating contrary to the conditions of the operating licence, resulting in the vehicle being impounded.
When officers checked the driver’s ID number, they found that the 45-year-old has 85 outstanding warrants and fines to the value of R285 600.
‘These fines and warrants represent a level of audacity that is far too commonplace on our roads. The disdain that many road users have for the law, and the agencies tasked to enforce it, is something that needs to be addressed. And, if people won’t change their attitudes and behaviour, then our staff will track them down, as our two most recent scofflaws found out. With the technology that we have introduced, it is possible to determine in minutes whether a driver has outstanding fines or warrants. Officers can even do these checks while in motion, using the Automated Number Plate Recognition software. So the scofflaws should consider themselves warned,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
Traffic officers made 36 arrests - 21 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 11 for reckless and negligent driving and four for other transgressions. Officers also issued 55 568 fines, executed 1 822 warrants of arrest and impounded 262 public transport vehicles.
Metro Police officers arrested 83 suspects and issued 3 477 notices during the past week.
The Public Emergency Communication Centre recorded 1 687 incidents over the weekend including 106 cases of assault, 70 domestic violence cases, 211 noise complaints and 49 motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents.
